Jewel broke the hug, shocked at what Sweetheart had just said about her family avoiding her like she was diseased. Jewel looked at Sweetheart, wiping her tears away.
"Oh no, Sweetheart. It's okay, baby. I'm glad to have someone to tell my problems to as well. I miss having someone to talk to. My life hasn't exactly been all sunshine and rainbows lately." she said.
"You're not diseased, Sweetheart. You're only human, and it's not anyone's right to treat you like dirt. Just remember that." Jewel said, trying to smile through her tears, stroking Sweetheart's cheek.

Sweetheart smiled happily at Jewel. She had never been cared for by anyone before and now she knew that there was someone who somewhat cared for her.
"Thanks, Jewel. You're an amazing girl." Sweetheart said. Heck, Jewel Kent was beyond amazing. "I was wondering: do many Newsies have bad pasts?"

Jewel smiled, possibly because this was the first time anyone ever told her she was amazing.
"Well, you're quite and amazing girl yaself, Sweetheart." she said, with a small laugh.
Jewel then thought for a second on how to answer Sweetheart's question about Newsies and their pasts.
"Well, Sweetheart...Lots of Newsies come from broken homes. Lots of them were poor orphans like me, even though I came from a rich family...and runaways like you. Every newsie has a past, not many of them could remember anything about them. Just remember this, whoever you talk to...be sure to be gentle with them. They're not gonna break or nothin', but some of them are sensitive." she said.

Sweetheart smiled at Jewel telling her that she was amazing as well. Then she looked up at Jewel.
"Jewel, I may not have had friends before, but I would never be rough with anyone. I always think before I act and I never want to offend anyone." She said seriously but still softly. Then she smiled jokingly. "I'm softer than a marshmallow."

Jewel listened closely as Sweetheart said something about being very gentle and not being able to hurt anyone. It made Jewel smile a lot.
"I'm softer than a marshmallow."
Jewel laughed hard when she heard Sweetheart say that. It was so adorable, she then kissed Sweetheart on the forehead, and hugged her again.
"I'm glad, cause I like Marshmallows. They are soft and cute...just like you." she said, smiling.

Sweetheart smiled happily at Jewel. "Thanks Jewel."
Then, Sweetheart turned worried and self-conscious. "Do you think that Lexi will let me stay here for a while?" she asked softly.

Jewel smiled at Sweetheart. She had to admit that the girl definitely lived up to her nickname. She was so incredibly sweet, and even though she was only a year younger than Jewel, she was upset, and Jewel couldn't let her go wild out there on the streets of New York by herself.
"You're welcome, Sweetheart." She whispered.
Jewel noticed the change in Sweetheart's expression. She sat on the nearby chair, and sighed.
"Oh, I'm sure Lexi will let you stay here. If I know Lexi, she will not let you wander around out there. Sometimes those streets aren't fit for man or beast. Trust me...I spent a week in Manhattan, and it was awful being out there...in the cold weather....so far from he people who care about you." she said.

Sweetheart nodded.
"Hey, Jewel. Could you tell me about Manhattan? Are there Newsies there too?" she asked.
Sweetheart figured that if there were Newsies here in Bronx, then there must be other Newsies around New York City.

Jewel adjusted her skirt, and got comfy in the chair before going to answer Sweetheart's question. She thought for a moment before finally leaning over.
"There are Newsies all over New York, honey. I used to work for the Brooklyn Newsies, but I didn't have a good time there much...so then I met Lexi and she offered me a chance to join up in the Bronx. As for Manhattan, I've only ever met one of the boys and one of the girls who work as Newsies in Manhattan. They were very nice people...and there are several others out there. There are newsies in Queens too, not too far from here. Every group of Newsies has a leader who cares and watches out for them. The leader of Brooklyn is a boy named Spot, he's a tough guy. Prince leads Queens, I met her one time. She's a nice person. A man named Jack leads Manhattan, I've never met him, but I hope to someday...and the Bronx has 2 leaders. Lexi leads us girls, and River now leads the boys. Everyone here takes care of each other...same goes for the other boroughs as well. Do they have Newsies in Missouri?" She asked.

Sweetheart listened intently to Jewel when she was talking about the other Newsie groups. Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.
"We used to have Newsies in St. Louis. They weren't like the ones here. They were always fighting among themselves. In fact, it got so dangerous for not only the Newsies but also the civilians, that the police had them placed into the State Pen, which is located in Jefferson City, and we started using Newspaper Stands instead. One time, I was watching the Newsies back home while they were yelling out the headlines and one of the stronger ones caught me watching. He came up to me and said "Mind your own business, you little whore! Don't you have a life you need to get back to?!" I started to apologize when he punched me right in the gut. He started beating me and if I hadn't used the branch I found to knock him out, he would have beaten me to death. I was ten at the time." Sweetheart said, shuddering at the memory.
Then, Sweetheart looked up at Jewel, with fear on her face. "Will any of the Newsies here do that to me?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Jewel went wide eyed with fear as Sweetheart explained her story about the newsies in St. Louis. She was glad to have been in Philadelphia around the time of the ordeal that Sweetheart just explained.
"Well, It kinda depends on who you come in contact with. I got into a barfight with a girl in Brooklyn about a few months back. It was horrible, I got a black eye and a broken nose from it, but I got my shots in as well. This girl was scary, but I held my own. The Brooklyn newsies hated me...that's why I came here. But as far as I know, there aren't many newsies who would hurt you as long as you keep ya nose clean, and stay outta trouble." She said.
Jewel sighed "I don't know what ta tell ya, Sweetheart. Things are tough out here, and some of the Newsies know that the only way you can survive..is to fight. But I don't recommend getting into fights a lot." She told Sweetheart.

Sweetheart looked scared. Brooklyn sounded terrifying!!!
"Wow! Brooklyn sounds scary!!! I guess that I should avoid those boys and girls as often as I can help it."
Then, Sweetheart thought of something.
"Wait! Jewel, what if I get hurt by one of the Brooklyn Newsies and I'm not even near Brooklyn?" she asked, sounding terrified.

Jewel could understand the terror in Sweetheart's voice. She knew she was afraid, cause it was the same way she used to feel at times when it came to Brooklyn.
"Don't worry, Sweetheart. You'll never have to worry about a lot of Brooklyn Newsies coming around ta hurt ya. The only reason why they came after me was cause they heard I started a few bad rumors, you don't have to worry about that though." She said.
Jewel then sighed "Just one warning, I know you wouldn't cause any trouble and all, but if you come across anyone who wants ta fight...don't cause enough trouble to get you kicked out of your borough. That's what happened to me... I can never step foot back in Brooklyn anymore." She said, tears spilling from her eyes again.

Sweetheart was surprised to see Jewel start crying at not being able to go back to Brooklyn. Sweetheart went over to Jewel and hugged her.
"I'm really sorry, Jewel. I shouldn't have asked. I didn't mean to make you cry. Please forgive me." Sweetheart asked.

Jewel hugged Sweetheart back. She sighed heavily, and dried her momentary tears. She coughed a bit, and prayed that she wasn't getting sick after being outside for so long. She then took a deep breath.
"Sweetheart, baby. I forgive you for making me cry.. I was never mad at you anyways. But it is a very sensitive subject for me. I'm so upset. There was a time when I had a boyfriend when I was in Philadelphia...but that went to hell." She said.
Jewel smiled through her tears "Just promise me somethin', Sweetheart. If you ever find a guy who likes you, make sure you're real nice to them, okay?" She said.
