As the wrapper bounced off the dog's head, Horseshoe snapped at it as though it were a ball he was expected to fetch, making as though to lumber to his feet when he missed it. Don't Ask placed a calming hand on Horseshoe's head, and the dog settled down again, looking dejected at his denial for playtime.
"Not far enough," Don't Ask muttered once Styx had gotten his choking cough under control enough to ask. "Mijn familie are in Yonkers, remember? Just a few miles thataway." He jerked a thumb over his shoulder, gesturing vaguely to the west. "Mijn papa is a tailor there. I just left so they wouldn't have zo veel monden te voeden. They have their hands full enough just taking care of mijn broer."
He paused, taking a drag off his cigarette as an excuse to think for a moment. He didn't really want to go home, he was pretty sure. Things were complicated there, too. But at least those complications were easier to manage. Cornelius the Wanderer had tried his damnedest to convince Don't Ask to return to Yonkers with him and the others when they'd left, and promised he was still welcome when Don't Ask steadfastly turned him down.
Horseshoe twisted around to set his head on Don't Ask's thigh, sighing heavily. Don't Ask pushed his head away to move the dog's nose from his crotch, then ran his fingers through the dog's fur. "You gonna come with me, Horseshoe?" he asked the dog lightly. "You wanna be a Yonkers pup?"
((ETA: Whoops, forgot your daily Dutch lesson!: "mijn familie/papa/broer" = "my family/father/brother" and "zo veel monden te voeden" = "so many mouths to feed".))

[New Day- for Sonkai]
Peaches walked through the front door leading into the corner cafe. Several people looked her way to see who had entered--the tinkle of the bell above the door catching their attention--and then went back to minding their own business. She walked up to the counter, placed her order for a large coffee and a blueberry muffin, and then made her way to one of the small, round, tall tables by the window and took a seat to wait.
Peaches sat for a couple minutes humming to herself and people watching outside while she waited, before a familiar face walking towards the cafe caught her attention. She rapped gently on the window with her finger, smiled when she looked, and then began waving for her friend to join her inside.

It was a rare morning off for Sonkai and she was enjoying it to the fullest, strolling around the different parts of Manhattan. Since she wasn't planning on doing anything special, she'd left her nicer dresses in the closet and settled for a simple navy skirt and white shirt and for once her hair wasn't tied back. She'd been getting antsy lately. It'd been awhile since she felt the way she did now, but it meant the same thing every time. She wanted to leave New York. She felt like she'd been here too long and was getting too attached. It wasn't her way or her people's way, but she was losing sight of that. She loved her job because it let her sing and dance. She didn't mind most of the customers and she'd actually grown fond of both Medda and several girls who worked there along with Sarah Williams.
As she was passing a small cafe, she heard a tap on the window next to her. A small smile crossed her face when she realized it was Peaches, trying to get her attention. When the girl beckoned for her to come inside, she nodded her head slightly and made her way towards the door she'd passed. Taking a seat across from Peaches she smiled widely, "Didn't realize you had off today too."

"Didn't realize you had off today too."
Peaches smiled at her friend, "Yeah. Medda said something about some of the new girls complaining that they're not getting enough stage time, so she told me to take a couple days off..." The waitress brought over the coffee and muffin she had ordered, placed it in front of Peaches, and walked back behind the counter. She took a sip of the coffee, enjoying the warmth slide down her throat, before she continued, "If you ask me, the new girls need a lot more then a few days of practice to be worthy of 'more stage time'. Did you see the other day at practice how one of them was missing almost every step they were being and taught? And when Medda asked me to go over one of the new songs we were supposed to learn with them, they hadn't even learned the words--let alone the notes--in the week she gave us."
Annoyed just thinking about it all, Peaches ripped off a piece from the top of her muffin and popped it in her mouth. Normally she was an easy-going, laidback person but the problems they were having at Irving Hall with the new girls Medda had just hired were really getting to her. Music was her passion and her job, and all the mistakes and lack of effort being put in by these girls were taking away from her time performing and earning a living. She took another sip of her coffee and focused her attention back on her friend and away from her thoughts. "I see you got today off as well...?"
(ooc: I figured Medda would often hire new girls as others moved on, so I used that. I didn't have anyone specific in mind.)

Sonkai laughed lightly when Peaches started to rant about the new girls. She couldn't help but agree with her though. She had been wondering what Medda had seen in them other then a pretty face. She had a feeling they wouldn't last on the stage very long and would be delegated to serving the customers. Not that Sonkai would mind because that would mean she wouldn't have to interact with the customers which would be nice. One of the few things she hated about working for Medda was that she wasn't just on stage and behind the scenes, she was also expected to work the floor and Sonkai just did not play well with others.
"Just this morning," Sonkai's lips tilted into a small smirk. "I don't need a week and a half to learn my routines like the new girls do." It was rare for her to even need a day. She was a natural at singing and dancing and playing certain instruments. It was in her blood so much so that even the few years she hadn't done much of any of those things hadn't affected her talent. "Though I'm certainly not looking forward to performing with those cows."
Sonkai rolled her eyes and gave Peaches a genuine smile. Since coming to New York Sonkai had only made a few friends and Peaches was one of them. She was the girl that Sonkai knew she could open up to if she wanted, but she usually didn't. Besides Peaches, Sonkai only really spoke to Medda and when she could get to Queens she'd visit Sarah and have a few drinks with the woman. She knew she needed to do that soon especially since she wasn't sure how much longer she was going to stay in Manhattan.
((OOC: totally fine hon))

Peaches chuckled at her friend's comment about the new girls. "God, I know. They're gonna make us look bad and then we're gonna loose our regular customers. I was thinking about mentioning to Medda about maybe letting the new girls do one of the songs by themselves. They want more stage time; let them have it--without it affecting us." She took another sip of her coffee and finished off her muffin. Then she smirked at her friend and added, "Then, if it's absolutely horrible you and I and some of the other girls come on and save the show." Peaches started laughing.
Peaches was rarely mean to anyone but since she became friends with Sonkai--a strong, independant, free spirit--she realized that being nice to EVERYONE tended to make people think they could walk all over you. And, growing up with three older brothers, there's NO WAY she'd let that happened. They had taught her to take her of herself and she didn't want to let them down.
Peaches tucked a strand of curly, red hair behind her ear. "So, what are you up to today on your day off? Were you headed anywhere in particular before I caught you?"

Sonkai laughed, "That sounds like a better plan then my own. If they were horrendous I was planning on upstaging them. Stealing the limelight as the saying goes." Sonkai shook her head and continued to chuckle quietly for a moment. It wouldn't be hard for her to do just that, she was an amazing dancer and if the girls couldn't follow the simple routine laid out for them, then they had no place within Irving Hall. Medda had too big of a hurt to just tell them that, but Sonkai certainly didn't.
"Just walking around, trying to get some fresh air." Sonkai grinned and pushed her hair back over her shoulder to keep it out of her face. "And what are your grand plans for the day?"

Peaches shook her head laughing at her friends comment. "Yeah, that is something you would do, darlin'. If we're lucky, they'll fail miserably and get demoted to servers. Less time we'd have to put in serving drinks... Cause I know how much you love that." She smirked at that last part knowing it to be completely false. Sonkai hated doing anything at Irving Hall except singing and dancing, which--given what little Peaches knew about her friend's background--came naturally to her. Often times, when the two of them were left alone at Irving Hall to clean or whatnot, they would practice routines on their own--Peaches playing the piano while Sonkai danced or sung, or Sonkai dancing while Peaches sung, occasionally joining her friend dancing. Music made the two of them happy and its what brought them together as friends.
Peaches finished off her coffee and pushed the mug to the edge of the table for the server to come pick up. "I don't really know. I was thinking about heading down to Caprice Hall later tonight to see their show and catch up with everyone... But, til then I don't know... I stopped by the Manhattan Lodging House earlier to visit with some of the boys but they weren't back from selling yet."

Sonkai laughed and shook her head, "Oh yes, who wouldn't love having their rear pinched by drunken buffoons?" She knew Peaches was teasing her because it was a well known fact at Irving Hall that if Sonkai could get out of serving the customers she would. She had a number of excuses in her arsenal, unfortunately for her Medda knew most of them already. But if it was a particularly rowdy night, Medda usually cut her a break and let her stay backstage when she wasn't dancing.
"Oh, if you happen to go to Caprice please tell Sarah I said hello." It had been too long since she'd seen her friend from Queens. But they both had busy schedules and rarely enough time to travel to the others borough to see one another. Sonkai chuckled under her breath, "Did you have a particular boy in mind?"
It had been a long time since Sonkai had met a man who was able to keep up with her. She enjoyed verbal sparring much more then normal girls her age and the last man she'd met who seemed as entertained by it as she was was months ago. She remembered his name, but she had no idea how to reach him even if she wanted to see him again. Which was one thing she would never admit to wanting.

Peaches rolled her eyes and smiled. "Oh yes. I look foward to it every night...," she replied sarcastically. "I may be a flirt but that sure doesn't mean I like being groped." She combed her fingers through her hair and pushed it back out of her eyes once again.
"Why don't you come to Caprice with me later? Tell Sarah hi, yourself. Get away from Manhattan on your day off..." Peaches smiled sweetly at her friend, knowing that it probably wouldn't work as well on her as it does the opposite sex, but trying anyways. It would be fun for Sonkai, Sarah, and herself to get together.
Peaches chuckled to herself. "No, no boy in particular. I grew up with three older brothers so whenever I'm missing them I pop over there. Being around boys instead of girls helps me to remember my brothers..." Her smile fell for a few minutes, thinking about her brothers. Wondering if Avery was stronger than the last time she saw him. Typhoid had made him very sick but he miraculously survived and was only just getting well again when she left. Out of all her brothers, that's who she missed the most. Pulling herself out of her melancholy thoughts she forced another smile and added, "Plus you know those boys. They just love to see us."

Sonkai chuckled lightly and shook her head, "Exactly." She'd never understood why Medda was so persistent about them working the floors when she knew how the men reacted towards them. Give the dumb jackasses a bit of alcohol and they felt they had the right to get all handsy with them.
"I would, but I have to get back tonight. Medda wanted me around in case she needed some extra hands." Sonkai expected Medda really wanted her to be there because the girls weren't living up to her expectations. She wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Medda pulled one from the show and replaced her with Sonkai as a warning to the others. She already had an idea of who would be pulled if that was indeed what Medda was planning. "Next time we have a night off together we'll have to go. It would be nice to escape Manhattan even if it was just for a night."
Sonkai nodded, knowing exactly how Peaches felt, but she had yet to meet any boy that could hold a candle to her brothers. She did miss them dearly though and wonder about them every day. "I expect it would be nice to get out of the trenches and away from the she-devils," She said with a smirk. She knew very well what the other girls thought of her, she could tell by the looks they sent her way, but she could care less. To her those girls were all catty, harebrained wannabes.
She laughed at Peaches comment about the boys loving to see them. "Yes, I suppose that is true for the most part." She also found though that not everyone was accepting of her heritage so she didn't really converse with many of them.

Peaches smiled, "I'm sure she does. Probably wants more then a helping hand. The girls are probably driving her nuts as well. She just can't leave, like we can." She giggled to herself. She wouldn't be surprised if, when she came back tonight, more then one of the girls were in tears because they got pulled from the show.
Peaches handed the server a couple coins as a tip before she made her way back to the kitchen. "What about you, Darlin'? I haven't had time to actually sit down and talk to you lately. Has any particular guy been able to charm his way into your heart?"
((Occ: Sorry this one's not as long. I'm still kinda sick and doped up on so much meds that my brain's not quite ready for the thinking, yet. heh.))

Sonkai laughed quietly at the thought of Medda being trapped at Irving Hall with a gaggle of annoying girls. It was amusing to say the least and she was more then happy that she wasn't also stuck there with them. After awhile it became more then irritating when they did little more then complain. "I doubt that'll ever happen, Peaches."
Sonkai gave her a conspiratorial wink and sly smile, "Although one did charm his way into my bed." Sonkai was used to being around Sarah so she didn't even contemplate that that might shock Peaches. "It was more then a little enjoyable."

Peaches giggled at her friend. "Oh really?! You'll have to point me in his direction next time you see him." She may not have been like a lot of the other girls who were practically in a different man's bed every night but she wasn't a prude. She's had the occasional one-night-stand when she saw a man that caught her attention; although it had been a while since the last time.
"It's been a while so I could use a good romp for once. I'm tired of drunk and fumbling boys feeling me up then passing out before they can actually perform the deed," Peaches added joking about her most recent experience. She had been singing on stage and caught sight of a gorgeous boy eye fucking her the entire time, so when she was finished performing she made her way over to him. She spent the evening sitting on his lap while he drank and whispered suggestive things in her ear. After Irving Hall closed she went back to his place and things got hot with some making out and heavy petting but before they could actually do any 'satisfying', he passed out and she ended up walking home alone. "God... Sugar, don't ever let me do that again. I think I was so desperate for a good time that I didn't realize how drunk he really was..."

Sonkai laughed and shook her head at Peaches, but didn't respond. The last thing she was going to do was point Peaches in the direction of Luke if he ever came back to Irving. Friend or not she wasn't prone to sharing her things and although Luke wasn't hers, she still wasn't going to share him. "Usually the stumbling gives them away," She said with a small smile.
Sonkai hadn't gone home with anyone or let anyone come to her rooms since she'd moved to New York. At first, it was because the memories of where she'd been and what had happened were still too fresh in her mind. Then she just couldn't find anyone who interested her enough for her to spend time with them. When she finally met Luke it had been more of a game then anything else, but the reward had been incredibly satisfying.
