Tobias patted Dutchy on the back and leaned back, "You did good, Dutchy. Who knows it may help, man?" He stared back out into the dark street. He didn't want to worry Dutchy any more than he already was by telling him that if there was some dirty cops behind the disappearances that they'd never spread the word around to the rest of the others.

PIper was sitting sideways on the front steps so she had her feet up and her back against the stoop. Her hat was on and had all of her red hair inside, hiding it from the blistery sun. She was having a drag and was enjoying the lazy day at The Lodging House. She kept replaying the previous events, her infamous scar that was now on her pale freckled cheek to show to the world, the kiss she had to Specs and then slapping him later, and other little things. She moved on from those events, now wanting to focus on now being taken and being with Drifter.
She moved her head slightly and she blew out the smoke, her scar visibly seen now. A deep clean cut from her ear to the corner of her lips. At first she wouldn't be caught dead outside with her scar shown, but now it didn't matter anymore.

River walked up the street whistling quietly under his breath. It'd been awhile since he'd walked these streets but there were several good reasons for that. The first being that since the second price hike he'd been working all sorts of odd jobs that were done at weird hours of the day an night and the second being that once these kidnappings started all he wanted to do was protect his own and he couldn't do that from another borough. But he was planning on visiting Lucky later today so he thought he might stop by a shop in Manhattan that sold decks of cards and see if he could find a cheap one for her.
The Manhattan Lodging House was on the way to the store so it was only logical that he would walk by it and say hi to everyone. He hadn't seen a lot of his friends in longer than he cared to know. When he saw Piper sitting out front he smirked and walked up, "My, my what a lovely woman sitting all by herself." He grinned a toothy grin to let her know he was kidding. He was farely familiar with newsies from all over the city and he never forgot a name or face.

Piper looked up from her spot on the steps and saw River Chambers. She knew River from his nice personality and good reputation. He was always nice to her and everyone else in Manhattan, heck he was a good newise to everyone in New York. One of those rare souls that knew how to kid but also knew how to be serious.
"Hey River, what brings you to Manhattan?" Piper asked in a curious tone as she cocked her head to the side. Some of her shiner was seen under her hat as she looked at River with a smile on her face.

River smiled at Piper before he noticed her bruise and when he did he sat down next to her, "You okay, Piper?" He hoped someone hadn't jumped her as well. It was sad that men thought they could beat up on women just because they were bigger than them. For a moment River ignored Pipers question and studied her face then he shrugged, "Passing through actually...thought I'd get Lucky a deck of cards before I went to see her."

"That's good, I know some places where they sell decks that are pretty decent and cheap too. If ya need any help let me know." Piper explained to him a she moved some of the fallen red hair from being near her face and eyes.
"OH this?" Piper asked as she saw him look at her shiner, she just gave him a small smile and shrug, "I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was Oscar Delancy's friends."

River frowned and shook his head, he despised men who beat on girls. Really and truly despised them. In fact, he hoped he saw the Delancy's while he was in Manhattan. He had a lot of built up anger over what happened to Lucky that'd he'd love to pound out on their faces. "Thanks, that'd be great. Cowboy tell all the girls here too not to go out alone?" He figured he had, but he was curious if all the boroughs were doing it. He already knew Conlon had told his kids that.

"I heard him, not to worry River. I already made that mistake once." Piper replied, moving her head to show the deep scar in her cheek and moved it back to normal again, "And I won't do it again."
Piper finished some of her cigarette and threw it to the pavement next to her. Using the heel of her boot she stopped the burning of the cigarette and smiled, digging into her pocket for another drag. She took out a new one and held it to River.
"Fancy a smoke?" she asked him in curiosity.

River's eyes widened a bit, "The Delancey's did that?" Oh yeah he was going to pound someone's face in. He stepped forward and pushed her hair back again studying it, it was deep but at least it would heal. And hell she might not have too bad of a scar in a few years. Those bastards were going to be in for it. He shook his head slightly at her question, "I'm not smoking too much these days."

Piper nodded and lit the drag in her mouth, breathing it in and feeling more relaxed than ever. Since she was in the fight with the boys she smoked a lot more, mostly from the stress haunting her and the images replaying over and over again in her brain.
"GOod thinkin', though I should try it. Nowadays I smoke more than eva' ." Piper replied, letting the air out and tilting her head up in see the sun from under her hat.

River laughed and nodded his head, "Ah I used to smoke like that but I just got sick of the smell. Now I usually just smoke with a drink." Giving her a shrug, River leaned against the wall by the stoop. Honestly he had quit smoking so much not because of how the smell had affected him but because many women he had tried to pick up hadn't liked it. He figured it was for the best anyway, it was a habit he couldn't really afford these days. "How've things been here?" He nodded his head towards the lodging house as he asked the question.

"THings have been normal, though it's still a bit unusual since we had some of our own taken. So mostly, everyone has been on their guard." Piper explained as she got up from sitting up form the stoop and stretching her pale legs and arms. She felt a knot in her shoulder and rolled it out, feeling much better.
"How about the Bronx? Everything okay there?" PIper asked in curiosity.

River nodded, even though Lexi put on a brave face he saw the haunted look in her eyes whenever he looked in them. It's what put him off whenever he went to speak with her, he'd let Dodger handle that one. He was never really good with emotional women, maybe that's why he'd always steered more towards Brooklyn girls. Giving Piper a shrug he looked around before answering, "Bout the same. We're holding it together though and trying to figure this mess out."

>>>>>NEW DAY<<<<<
"Don't Ask!" Dutchy ran after his friend, still trying to figure out what the hell was so bad about a few bandages. He nearly tripped down the steps, not hesitating long enough inside to lose track of Don't Ask entirely. Jack had said to stay in pairs. What if someone took advantage of Don't Ask's panicked state and hit him over the head with ...a gun?
Dutchy sped up and just managed to grab the back of Don't Ask's shirt, turning him around to face him a little more forceful than he'd intended. They stood on the side walk on the corner across the street from the Lodging House.
"Wat is er aan de hand!?"

"No, no, laat me gaan!" Don't Ask yelped, struggling as Dutchy seized the back of his shirt. "Laat me gaan!" As Dutchy forced him around, he jerked, ripping himself away from his friend's grasp. He took a step back, keeping a couple feet between them, but at least he didn't take off running again.
"Niets!" he insisted, panting and crossing his arms over his chest, one hand pressed to the column of his throat. "Niets is aan de hand! Ik moest om eruit te komen van daar. Teveel mensen. Ik ben droevig, doe ik niet goed in groepen. Ik begin aan paniek."*
Don't Ask turned and backed up against the wall of the building they were alongside, and leaned forward, his palms on the tops of his thighs, taking deep breaths. "Ik ben droevig. Het was niet u. Ik kon niet enkel ademen met zo vele mensen het drukken tegen me."** He gasped and panted, continuing to suck up far more air than normal. "Christus, ik nog steeds niet kan ademen..."***
(* "Nothing! Nothing is going on! I just had to get out of there. Too many people. I'm sorry, I don't do well in groups. I start to panic.")
(** "I'm sorry. It wasn't you. I just couldn't breathe with so many people pushing against me.")
(*** "Christ, I still can't breathe...")
