Catherine's eyes widened in surprise, worry and joy all in one. She sat up, peering out the window at him, making sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her.
"Seth!" She smiled, grabbing his hand, ,grateful for his touch. Then as soon as she grabbed it, she released it, her smile fading. "What are you doing here?"

"Seth! What are you doing here?"
Reeves was glad as well to hold her hand, but she quickly drew her hand back, and her smile faded to more of an anxious one. Reeves just shrugged, calm as usual.
"I just finished my route, was wandering down Fifth. I was admiring the horses and then I saw you," He answered, looking at her a little curiously, hoping nothing was wrong.

Catherine smiled softly, looking into his eyes admiringly. Seeing him made everything she was going through seem worth it. "Oh, it is so good seeing you."

"Oh, it is so good seeing you."
Reeves nodded, and felt his breath catch in his throat a little. Catherine's voice was so calm and gentle sounding, and to hear her say these words made Reeves heart speed its pace. He smiled and reached for her hand again.
"Same here. You have no idea how much I've missed you. Works been treating me like garbage lately. The store hired another delivery boy, so my routes have been slower, my wages smaller."

She reached through the window and grabbed his hand. "I have missed you as well. Things have been real troublesome lately. People know...about you and I."

"I have missed you as well. Things have been real troublesome lately. People know...about you and I."
Reeves mouth just about dropped open, and he gaped up at her, his dark blue eyes full of worry.
"They do? What? When? How? Catherine? Are you alright?" If anything bad was happening to her, Reeves would feel terrible, it was all his fault after all. He didn't think before he did. He knew he loved Catherine Woodruff, but he knew it was foolish. He himself didn't think it was foolish. But to anybody else the idea was absurd. A dirt poor Delivery boy? and a Lieutenant's daughter? He knew they would just end up getting in trouble.

Catherine shook her head. "Nothing has been said to me, at least not personally, but I hear them talk. I don't know if my father knows or not, he hasn't mentioned it, but Henry..." She trailed off looking behind her to make sure Miss Meridith was still inside, before looking back at Reeves. "Henry wont look at me. I try to speak to him and he keeps his eyes from me." She sighed.

"Nothing has been said to me, at least not personally, but I hear them talk. I don't know if my father knows or not, he hasn't mentioned it, but Henry... Henry wont look at me. I try to speak to him and he keeps his eyes from me."
Reeves let out a breath. He was glad that her father hadn't breached the subject yet, but he still felt guilty. He knew Henry, and one look in Catherine's green eyes and you could tell it bothered her. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, at a loss for what to say. He thought about it for a moment.
"Hey, does your father know Mr. Alexander Briggs, down at the department store?" Reeves asked, pondering the fact of his job. He wasn't sure if it was a result of this or just something general, but as far as Reeves knew, the circulation of the story wasn't in high steam, he didn't understand why they would need two delivery boys.

Catherine pursed her lips as she thought about it. The name sounded familiar to her. Her father seemed to know everyone. No matter how high or low they were. She shrugged.
"It's possible. Why do you ask?

"It's possible. Why do you ask?
Reeves sighed and paced a couple steps before turning back to Catherine, sighing again, going back to his old habit of toying with the button on his vest.
"I was just thinking, s' might be the reason for the new delivery boy," as he thought about it more, he got a little more anxious. "If that's the reason, they're gonna lay me off entirely eventually."
Reeves didn't want to be so worked up but he just was. Sure, he could find a new job...well he hoped he could. And they had Danny to support them with his engineering and mechanic work, and Alice worked as a waitress at a little cafe in the Bronx. They still struggled with the rent though no matter what.
"So Henry knows then. Don't you think he would have told your parents?" Reeves asked, confused. His mind was a raging whirlwind and just wouldn't seem to slow its jumbling thoughts.

Catherine watched Seth pace back and forth. His actions made her nervous. She squirmed around in her seat as she waited for him to recompose himself. She didn't want Seth to lose his job over her. Whether he could get another or not was irrelevant. She didn't want to cause undo trouble. He did have a point though. Why would a new delivery boy be sent to her house in his place. She had hoped he would make more deliveries to their house, but even if he had she would not have known. She was not allowed near the door and her mother had even hired and extra hand to stand by the door at all times.
Catherine didn't know how Henry or anyone else knew about them, but it didn't surprise her. Like she said before, she was always being watched and as much as she tried to put it in the back of her head and not think about it, the fact still remained.
Catherine shrugged. Henry and their mother rarely spoke, but he was very close with their father, especially after what happened between her father and her other brother Robert. She thought if Henry had told her father then he wouldn't be able to look at her either. He wold tell her mother who would try and talk her out of it and tell her how foolish she was being. Maybe even blame it on being ill. The more she thought about it, though, the more she thought it was impossible for her father not to know. He knew everything and with everyone talking...
"I don't know. Maybe he's protecting me..."

"I don't know. Maybe he's protecting me..."
Reeves sighed and nodded. Henry wasn't that bad of a guy, Reeves could tell he cared for his sister. At least he thought so. He really couldn't tell. Darry had always told him that the rich didn't know love...
His job being taken away wouldn't scare him away from Catherine, that didn't mean it wouldn't hurt him at all. He hadn't told anybody in his family about Catherine. He didn't know why. Seventeen year old Danny and him were practically best friends, though brothers, but he was still scared to tell.
He just sighed and stopped his pacing, and looked into Catherine's eyes once more. They seemed to always have a calming effect on him. He remembered her words down at the pond. She didn't care what others thought. But that didn't mean that they could go on meeting whenever they wanted. This love was difficult and risky.

Catherine smiled, reassuringly, kissing his hand and said, more for herself than him, "Things will get better. It will be all right."

"Things will get better. It will be all right."
He managed a lopsided smile, not as confident as his usual smile. He just wished he could know what she said was true. He kissed her hand back.
"You still got my music box, Catherine?" He waited for her reply. "As long as that thing plays I want your hope to be good, okay? Just promise me that."

She smiled and nodded, remembering the gift he gave her at the amusement park. She played it when she was feeling sad before she went to sleep and the sweet, melodic notes would take her to a place where they didn't have to worry about keeping their love a secret.
Catherine turned to see Miss Meridith buying her books. She pulled the golden necklace from her neck. At the end was a small diamond in the shape of a heart.
"I want you to have this, so you know always, no matter what happens, my heart is yours and always will be."
