Reeves' gaze followed Catherine's to the well off lady in the store. Reeves made a slight "uh oh" face. This lady had the face of a sour prune. She was probably quite strict. Reeves didn't want to meet her anymore than he wanted to meet a cactus.
"I want you to have this, so you know always, no matter what happens, my heart is yours and always will be."
Reeves took the necklace from her, clutching it in his dirt stained hands, fingering it. Then he looked up at her and leaned into the window, kissing her firmly but quickly and then pulled away.

The joy Catherine felt when she was with him couldn't be matched. She wished they could have more than the couple minutes they had. Catherine pulled Seth back into a kiss pulling away just as the door to the shop opened up.

As Catherine pulled away and Seth heard the door open and turned to see the lady coming out. He turned to Catherine. "Uh oh, Catherine. I'll see you soon,r eal soon!"
He went around the coach and then headed down the side walk, running slightly, darting out of Catherine's governess' view. At least he hoped. He felt bad that he didn't really have time for a proper goodbye, seeing as who knew when he would see Catherine again? But he decided it would probably be better than to have the strict woman find her student and her charge kissing a dirt poor street kid.

*New Day(Well Night)*
Poet walked beside him, it really hadn't taken as long as she had thought it would, which was a disappointment. She had gone through her cigarette already though. At this point she pulled out another one and lit it bringing it to her lips and taking a drag before blowing out a smoke ring. She looked over at him,"I apprecciate yer company Tobes....."she muttered, she didn't mean to call him that but she tended to think of a name for somebody that only she used every so often. She looked down at her feet as they walked and she dropped her right hand to her side, it was dark, the moon was out and the streets starting to empty. She knew this was the rich neighborhood but she liked to dream about what it'd be like to live in it. She fell silent in her thoughts of money, food, warmth, all things she wish she could have in mass amounts, even love....She sighed and shook her head at herself, there was no hope in her useless dreams.

Toby smiled, a tinge of red flashing over his face from the nickname and then fading, "It was my pleasure, Poet. Sorry, it didn't take as long though." As they walked along, he took notice of Poet eying some of the houses along the street and then shake her head. "What are you thinking about...?"
Toby shoved his hands in his pocket, and looked up at the stars, waiting for her response.

She was rather distant with her thoughts but snapped out of it at the sound of his voice,"Hmmm? oh..... just foolish dreams.....its useless stuff things that we dream about that we know we have no chance at,"she murmured as she took another puff. She could feel a slight pain in her stomach but she ignored it figuring it to be because she had only eaten a piece of bread this morning and her stomach was now full of booze. She eyed her cigarette as she took it out of her mouth and blew another smoke ring, she was hesitating on whether to put it out and save it for later thinking it may make her stomach hurt worse. She decided on just finishing it so she kept it in her hand for now.

"Hmmm? oh..... just foolish dreams.....its useless stuff things that we dream about that we know we have no chance at,"
Toby sighed and looked down at his feet, kicking a rock as he walked. "You mean like having a family, friends, knowing what it's like to be happy again..." he muttered under his breath. Then, he cleared his throat realizing he might have said that louder than he intended. He forced a smile onto his face, "Sorry. I don't mean to be such a downer..."
Toby crossed his arms in front of his chest, unconsciously putting a barrier between Poet and himself.

She stopped in her tracks and leaned against the brick wall off a building. She looked down as she flicked her cigarette to the ground and stepped on it. She folded her arms around her stomach and inhaled slowly,"Don't be sorry.... it's true,"she mummbled as she looked over at him a small halfhearted smile on her face, she hoped it would make him feel better. She cringed slightly but pushed the pain away again, she wouldn't deal with it now, she would deal with it back at the lodging house, though she would be overly upset if she were getting sick.
She looked away from him as she looked up at the stars only few were visible from here. She bit her lower lip and shivered slightly at the light breeze and her lnging to be in bed right now but then again, what was the point? Sleeping in a room full of girls who she didn't even know, well at least she didn't know enough to call them more than acquaintances even if she did consider the newsies her family, thats all she knew of sadly for anything close to family. She couldn't believe that she was with somebody now and of all times this was the time she was gonna get sick or break down or worse both.

Toby walked a bit ahead before he realized that Poet had stopped. He turned around and walked back to her and stopped. He let out a snort before commenting, "Well, I guess it's true what they say about misery loving company..." He relaxed a bit and shoved his hands back into his pockets.
Toby looked up at the sky again, before letting his gaze fall on Poet, just in time to see her shiver. He took his hands out of his pockets, unbuttoned his long sleeved checkered shirt, and handed it to her. Before she could protest he motioned to his under shirt and said, "This shirt is good enough for me. I don't really get cold." He held it out in front of her so she could put it on, and smiled...

Poet looked at him in confusion, she didn't know why he was being so nice to her, nobody had ever been really nice to her for as long as she could remember. She put it on just to phase him even though the cold wasn't the most important problem in her mind. She folded her arms around her body again after putting it on, she wondered if anyone would care if she got sick, she wondered if anyone would notice even. She sighed and looked at him wishing that she could do something, wishing that there was something beyond her emptiness but even with him standing there she still felt the emptiness because she knew what awaited her at the lodging house, nothing, nobody. She couldn't do it, she slid to a seated position on the ground with her back against the wall and she pulled her knees to her chest and for the first time in years hot tears fell from her shining eyes. She didn't know what to say to him, she didn't know what else to do.

Toby slid down the wall to sit beside Poet, not really sure what to do. He wasn't very experienced in responding to emotions but he knew he wanted to comfort her. He closed his eyes trying to remember what he had seen other guys do when a girl was crying. He remembered seeing one guy pull his girlfriend in for a hug, pulling her tight against his chest. He shook his head, doesn't apply here. he barely knew Poet. Then he remembered seeing another guy put an arm around his friend's shoulder giving her comfort while she cried. He opened his eyes and released the air he had been holding in. Well, I guess this could apply... "I'm not really good with this kind of stuff but I'll try my best." he whispered. He bit his bottom lip and put an arm around Poet's shoulder. Then, pulled his handkerchief out of his pocket and held it out to her.

She felt the weight of his arm on her shoulders and she was confused, not in a bad way, but she just didn't understand anything any more. She found herself lean toward him and she burried her face against his shoulder as she cried, she knew that she barely knew him, but she didn't feel wrong about acting this way. She didn't bother with the handkerchief even though it was a nice gesture but instead she found herself wrapping her arms around him and crying into his shoulder and clinging to him like a child, she'd never been able to break down before, they were supposed to be strong, tough, only the little kids were supposed to cry.
"I'm sorry....you shouldn't hafta see meh like this..."she slurred through sobs, she could feel her stomach churning and she continued to ignore it for as long as she could.

"I'm sorry....you shouldn't hafta see meh like this..."
Toby turned so he was facing Poet, wrapped both his arms around her, and rubbed circles on her back, letting her cry into his shoulder. "S'nothing ta be sorry about. Nobody can be expected ta hold it in forever..." He continued rubbing her back and her arms, trying to calm her down. "I won't tell anyone... And, I won't think any less of you. I promise."
Toby looked up and down the street to make sure no one was around to catch such a scene. He didn't want her to have to deal with questions from her fellow newsies and have to explain why she was crying, or to be the topic of their current gossip. And, he didn't want anyone to say they had seen the 'softer side of Toby'. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't embarrassed by his current situation. In fact, he rather enjoyed it. He just didn't want to loose his reputation of being intimidating; it helped him help the leaders keep kids in line and do his job at the bar...

She didn't care any more, she was sick of hiding, sick of being strong, sick of faking that stupid smile. She looked up into his eyes through her tears and nothing seemed more clear to her than him, but she didn't know why. How could someone she just met bring this side out of her, bring so much out of her, how could he hold her like this and not feel awkward and how could she let him and feel just fine. She placed a hand on his cheek as she tilted her head,"you....why are you different then them?"she whispered softly more of a rhetorical question but if he wanted to answer she'd love to hear it.
She looked down and bit her lip as she suppressed her tears, she wish'd she could have all the answers, she wish'd that someone would tell her everything but it wouldn't happen. She cringed but just ended up looking back up into his eyes,"Why....do I feel like this?"she mummbled.
