Race shrugged, puffing out some smoke. "I've been bettah," he said, patting his empty pockets. Glancing down at the note he had forgotten about, he shrugged again, handing it to Jack. "Probably jist some factory tryin' ta recruit kids or somethin', ya know?"

Jack read the note over a couple times. "...I doubt it. This seems...fishy." He sighed reading it over yet again. "I dunno...I think.." He looked at Race. "You hang with the gambling crowd...could this be something to do with that? Maybe a mob thing?"

Race looked to Jack doubtfully, snatching it back and scanning over it again. Scratching the back of his head he shrugged, handing it back. "I don't think so Jack. I mean, what would da mob want with a bunch o' poor kids, huh?"

Sweets trudged toward the lodging house, her hat pulled low and her hands stuffed in her pockets. Seeing the two sitting outside she grinned slightly. "Heya fellas, how's it goin'?" she asked, leaning on the steps. "Whachya got there?"

Jack shrugged a bit at Race. "I dunno Race...I just don't know."
Looking up at Sweets, he smiled tiredly. "Look." He handed the letter to her. "...its interesting, to say the least."

Sweets read through the letter, then glanced up at Jack, raising an eyebrow. "What'd you spose is the catch?" she asked, reading through it again and cocking her head slightly. "I mean... it sounds pretty good right?"

Jack nodded and shrugged. "Yeah I know. But that's what worries me. It doesn't sound too good to be true, but.." He shook his head. "I don't like the idea of someone tryin' to take my kids away."
He sighed. "Maybe I'm bein' selfish. You guys should be able to leave this life if ya want."

Sweets felt a wave of guilt wash over her and handed it quickly back to Jack. "Nah, you're right, I guess it does seem a little off..." She turned around and took a seat next to Race, resting her face in her hands.

Jack shrugged. "I might be a bit paranoid." He laughed softly and ruffled Sweet's hair. "Nah..if you want to go for it...do. I ain't right for me to keep ya from better money...god knows we could all use more."

She shrugged casually, pulling out a cigarette. "Yea, I dunno, might just check it out, let ya guys know the scoop or somethin'. . ." She was of course playing down her curiosity. With all of the slow headlines lately, she had been looking for a way to get some extra change.

Sweets looked up at him, smiling. "Shore thing Jack," she said, standing and dusting off a bit. "Well it's killin' me, I gotta go check it out," Turning to walk down the sidewalk she stopped, glancing back over her shoulder. "If I don' come back in an hour . . well, maybe come find me?" she asked, her faltering grin giving away her sincerity.

"See ya latah," she said, turning and walking into the busy streets, vanishing into the crowd.

((New day))
Mush relaxed on the front steps. He'd heard about the note, and heard it caused quite the stir. And yet here he was a bit relaxed sitting on the steps of the lodging house. He smiled as he watched people go by. They all seemed to be living fairly uneventful lives, and the newsies always seemed to have another problem coming up. It made him laugh a little as he watched the people go by with the smile still on his face.
