Jack sighed, looking around the bunkroom. He was going to miss this. But...he needed to do this. He just wasn't giving it his whole heart anymore.
Making sure no one was around, he tacked up a letter on the wall right when you walked into the bunkroom.
Manhattan Newsies--- I'm leaving for Santa Fe for two months. I will be back. I know some of you will be upset...but understand I had to do this. I couldn't be a good leader to you anymore. I lost my passion...I'm going to find it. I will be back David Jacobs is in charge until I get back. Listen to him. Goodbye. Jack "Cowboy" Kelly

Sweets bounded up the stairs in an unusually good mood. In her cheery speed she nearly walked right past the small piece of paper pinned up on the wall. Taking a few steps back she swiped it down from the wall reading it in her hands.
couldn't be a good leader
lost my passion
She couldn't believe what she was reading. What was he talking about? He was a great leader! She frowned and moved over to her bunk to sit down, the letter hanging limp in her hands. She couldn't understand it, no matter how many times she read it. Feeling her eyes begin to sting with tears she quickly crumpled the paper, throwing it in a ball to the floor and burying her face in her pillow. We don't need him, she thought bitterly, but deep down knew nothing could be further from the truth.

Hawkeye sauntered out of the washroom--actually, it was much more of a stagger than it was a saunter. A blanket was draped over her shoulders, her hair was a mess, and there were lovely dark circles under her eyes. If that wasn't enough of a hint, the fact that she was sick was confirmed by her nose, which was as red as a tomato.
Completing her mission (finding a box of tissues and a glass of water), she stumbled over to her bunk. Noticing Sweets, she said, "Hey, whad's ub wib you? You disabbeared for a while." Her voice showed obvious signs of a cold, and the sneeze that followed only aided that. She sat down and took a sip of water, watching Sweets over the top of the glass.

Hands entered the room, hoping to find the leader of the Manhattan Newsies. The two girls she found were complete strangers; but she hoped one of them would be.
She looked at both of them for a moment, the girl with her face in the pillow, and the other sick-looking one, and knocked lightly on the wall.

Rose walked into the bunks, with an expression on her face that people usually make when they're lost, "Hey, does someone know--" she hadn't expected there to be so many people in the room, "Throwing a party without me, eh?"
She glanced over at Hawkeye and arched an eyebrow, "Rough day?"
Rose then noticed Sweets, whose face was buried in a pillow, "Ya know, normally when one wants to sleep during the day, they just turn the lights off. But I s'pose that works too," she smiled, "Ya okay?"

Sweets glanced at Hawkeye, lifting her head from her pillow. "I just. . "
Hearing a knock she whipped her head toward to door, wiping her face quickly. "Who's. . ."
She then heard Rose's voice and sat up, resting her elbows on her knees. "Nah Rose, I aint okay, none of us are. . ." She glanced down at the ball of paper she'd thrown on the floor. "He's gone."

Hands raised her eyebrows. One girl was crying... well, that never meant anything good. She wanted to ask what had happened; but didn't feel right. After all, they all knew each other. What if she was intruding on something important?
A slight expert on reading lips, she saw one girl say "he's gone", and she frowned. Who was gone?
Maybe I'll come back later.

It felt as if Rose's heart had stop beating, "Who, Sweets?" Frankly, she had a damn good idea who, but she didn't want to let herself believe it.
She slowly picked up the piece of paper and uncrumpled it. Rose finished reading the note and watched as a tear fell, landing on the sheet of paper.
"So that's what he wasn't telling me," she whispered, shaking her head, "I don't believe it. Why..." Rose was in awe over the whole situation and was at a lack of words.

"Why?" Sweets stood, grabbing the note from Roses hands and waving it in her face. "Didn' you read it? He doesn't care that's why! Cause he's a joik!" She threw it down again, briefly glaring at it before stomping toward the fire escape.

Rose shook her head, kicking a bed post out of anger. She sat down on the bunk, burying her face in her hands.
"Coward.." she mumbled into her hands. He didn't even have the courage to tell his own newsies, his own friends that he was leavin'.
"Two months..." she stared at the floor, "Who knows if we'll all even be heah when he gets back."

Hawkeye choked on her drink, doubling over in a fit of coughing when Sweets responded, "He dib?"
At Rose's "rough day" comment, she glared, "I gobba cold," she wrapped herself tighter in her blanket, muttering, "I hate the cold. I hate the cold. I hate the cold."
She stayed silent as Rose and Sweets reacted to Jack's absence. She had never been very good at learning to cope with emotions, and usually glazed over them which a joke or just avoided them completely. Being someone who often came and went as she pleased, she wasn't particularly phased by Jack's leaving.
It was probably the cold getting to her sympathetic side (that side didn't show too often), but she choose to remain silent as opposed to cracking a bad joke (the first one that had come to mind was "Why did the chicken cross the road?"). She supposed that wasn't the best idea.

Rose let herself fall back, staring at the bunk above. She remained silent, taking a moment to think about everything.
"S'pose we should 'ave seen this comin'," she let out a sigh, "Maybe we asked too much from him."
Rose managed a smirk as she heard Hawkeye's muttering. She reached towards the end of the bunk, grabbing a blanket. Once in her grasp, she threw it in Hawkeye's direction, "Might help."

At the moment the blanket was thrown, Hawkeye sneezed, so when it hit her, she was caught completely off-guard and went crashing to the ground. From underneath her mass of blankets, she called out, "Thank you."

David took a deep breath and opened up the bunk door slowly, making sure everyone was dressed and all. "Hi ladies.." He said quietly.. He didn't really know what to say but he knew that he had to take care of this. Jack knew what he was doing, and since he hadn't left for Santa Fe the first time, he needed this. He would be back after all, and he'd be even better then before.
