A completely empty building. No one lives here, but the door is missing. Multiple floors and rooms make it a great hiding place, or for a game of hide-and-seek!

She was lost and didn't have a clue where she was, she knew Brooklyn and the Bronx well, but not Manhattan or Queens. It had begun to rain so she had run into this building. By the time she was in the building she was soaking wet. Looking around she was intrigued by the building. It looked like a play house. She walked towards the stairs and stepped on the first step. It groaned beneath her foot. She quickly stepped off. Laughing nervously she started back up the stairs. Thats when she started to become frighten. Spade heard all these noises, like wild animals, but spookier. She jumped a foot high when something nudged her hand. Looking down at something wet in her hand and realized that Devil had pushed his nose into her hand. He was her black dog, but he looked more like a over sized rat. She smiled and ruffled his wet head.

He had been walking around aimlessly just strolling around in Manhatten, when it had started to rain. He went inside the builidng, which had been empty for years, to try and get out of the rain. He still had no idea what he was going to do. It had only been a day and the news that Arianette was pregnant was fresh on his mind, what would happen now? , he thought. He didn't get to thinking too much, when he swore he heard someone moving. There wasn't much to see in the old building except a stairwell, so he called out, "Anyone there?" and his voice echoed.

Spade jumped a foot as the voice echoed through the house. Devil started barking madly he made a dash for the stairs. Grabbing his collar to prevent him from attacking anyone she tried to pull him into a room to escape out the building. But Devil was much stronger than her. He dragged her over to the stairs with her stumbling after him. She ended up at a pair of boots, hair all in her face and not knowing if she was in trouble or not. A little frightened but determined she slowly raised her eyes the the mans face. "Hello," she said tentatively and then hating the uncertainty in her voice she demanded, "What do you want?"

"I'm Officer Carter and it's nice to meet you too." He held his hand out to help the young girl up. The black dog was growling at him, showing his teeth. "So, Miss, what exactly are you and your dog doing in this abandoned old building?" He thought she may have been an orphan, she was a bit jumpy though, he noticed. He kept one hand rested on his nightstick, he wasn't sure about the dog.

Looking at the hand with a mixture of uncertainty and dislike. She wasn't sure about him, but ignoring his hand she used her hands and pushed herself up to her feet. Brushing her hands off she looked back into his eyes. She wasn't about to let him make her feel inferior. Noticing his hand on his nightstick and the way he was looking at Devil she glared at him. "If you lay one hand on my dog," she threatened, though she didn't actually know what she would do, but she wouldn't stand there and watch him hurt her family.

He stuck both his hands in his pockets. He wasn't going to hurt the dog, as long as it didn't hurt him. "'Scuse me Miss, but what exactly are you doing here? Do you live here?" He had dealt with teenage attitudes before, and just tuned it out. He could tell she was serious about her dog, maybe this was her only family know, he thought. He always tried to think up reasons of why orphans were, well, orphans.

Shaking her head, she shrugged. It might have been where she slept tonight, she hadn't been to the Bronx lodging house yet. She had planned to go there the other day, but had ended up searching for Devil, to make sure he was alright. "No I do not live here, it was raining and I needed to get out of the rain. I didn't want to catch pneumonia." Petting Devil she looked back at the officer. Shrugging she said, "Well, I might have been considering spending the night here."

"Well I really don't like having to take kids to the refuge. Did you run away from home?" He only took kids to the refuge if they had absoulutely no place to go. He didn't much care for the Warden. But an empty building was no place for even a bum to live. The dog had ceased growling at him, which had made him relax a bit more.

"Well, I didn't exactly run away from home, but this is none of your business," She looked at him almost as if she was looking past him. Shaking her head she asked, "Can I ask you a question officer, why would I have to go to the refuge? Every where I go I see adults living on the street, why am I any different? I mean my parents were going to," she stopped there. What was she doing, telling her story to a complete stranger. "You know what I think I'm going to go." She began walking past him towards the door.

"You go to the refuge, because your just a kid." He saw that she was walking away from him. "You might want to be careful, it's not safe in New York city at night." He decided then that he wasn't cut out to be a cop, he was too lenient on young kids. "If I catch you living on the streets though, I will take you in." He had to sound stern or else they would walk right over him.
He noticed it was still raining and wished he had brought an umbrella.

Her eyes flashing she looked back at him, "Why is it that I'm a kid when 'Adults'," she made the word sound like a bad thing, "want me to, but when its convenient for them I'm an Adult? Please officer explain that to me? If you can you won't see me again," she took a breath and said, "at least not on the street." She stood there impatiently tapping her foot as she wait for him to say something.

She was obviously annoyed so Carter took his time then replied "Thats a good question actually... I guess I'll be seeing you around." He didn't have an answer because he often wondered the same. He went and sat on the first stair, signaling that he wasn't keeping the girl there. The stair creaked a bit, but he payed it no attention.

Her eyes narrowed, "You know for an officer who butts in where I didn't want him to, you don't have many answerers." Looking back at the door way she realized it was pouring now. "Oh great," she mumbled. She had two choices now and she didn't like either of them, but one would last until the rain stopped and the other would last until she was dry. Slowly she turned around and walked up the stairs, "Personally I don't want to be wet for a day," she explained as the went to go explore the building.

"Same here", he mumbled. He turned his head to look up at her. "What exactly was I butting into, eh? You got something illegal going on in here. I was only getting out of the rain." He stood up then and started up the stairs. What if she was working for the Raconteurs? He decided to search the building himself.
